Anything that highlights a center square. On a basic level, think of a churn dash where the outsides frame that center. And you can make the center any size you want. Any sort of modified log cabin that starts with as large a square as you want (even different sizes in different blocks) and build the logs to finish to the desired block size. This is also very handy if there are a lot of colors in the focus fabric because you can use them all and in different blocks. This allows for each block to highlight the critter and yet for a cohesiveness to the whole quilt top.

I love View from the Cabin. It combines room for a large scale print with the traditional log cabin blocks. It can be purchased through Twin Cities Quilting, 651-340-8263. They don't sell their patterns on-line.

You can also treat it like a center panel and add assorted pieced borders around the center.
