I made my last duvet cover from a pieced quilt top. I quilted it to cheap Joann's flannel and the used that as the top. It's been on the bed for several years now. I've washed it many times (I have dogs that sleep on the bed) and it's done fine. It's a bit heavy for the south, but I have a lightweight comforter so it works out okay.
I didn't put any backing on the flannel, but since I insert the comforter by turning the duvet cover inside out and laying it on the bed, then putting the comforter on the top and keeping it in place using comforter clamps I can just turn it rightside out with no problems.

I learned that many years ago and it works great. What a wonderful idea using a wool blanket! It would probably be too warm for me here in the south, but it would be so nice on a cold night.

It seems that there has been a discussion of douvets a long time ago (I've been a QBer since 2008). Don't know how I would do it, but probably line it as though it were a huge tote bag...no batting. Then place some type of closure to keep the comforter inside...probably buttons or hook and loop tape. Good luck.
