    I've made many quilts using the same QAYG method you are using. I always use one layer of Warm and Natural Traditional batting. I use a longer stitch and a heavier thread for the quilting. Using more than one layer or thicker batting will make it difficult to sew the blocks together. Please keep in mind that while you have less quilting when you add the backing, you will still have lots of material under your machine. I find this method of QAYG better suited to twin size and under.
