From your photo it looks as if you have not stitched down the appliqué. If you do that as your quilting, whether you use a straight stitch or blanket stitch it will probably be enough. You could also to a single echo around the elements.

Your quilt is gorgeous in every way. I think simple quilting around some of the elements would make them stand out from the wonderful background and would not compete with the design. I hope you will enjoy quilting for lots of years ahead.

I agree but I would do a few more outlines of the dark or black butterfly. It is beautiful--Nice Job!

As bjchad said, do sew down every element that was fused on to your quilt...fusing isn't forever and it will come loose (ask me how I know!). I would quilt around all the fused areas, then using painter's tape as a guideline, do a diagonal cross-hatch grid 1" apart to keep everything from sagging, but don't do the cross-hatch over the applique. How far apart you quilt is determined by the batting you use...some need to be quilted 4" apart and some are good with 10". If I can lay my hand down on a quilt and not touch quilting, I don't think it is quilted close enough together. It is beautiful and I can't wait to see what you do with the quilting.

good advice, thank you! I thought the fusing would hold. I am a proud mom of a daughter in the airforce. I see you have one in the Army. I have another daughter who served in the Army. Also a son who was in the Navy. Thank you all!

Welcome to the board from So CA. I would outline your applique first as others have mentioned but I might just do a few wavy lines just to prevent the quilt from sagging when hung.
