When u are quilting a quilt that has squares of large applique on it... do u quilt around it or over it? In this case... the applique is machine done and on a square of it's own. It is a monkey head @ 4x4 inches.

Edited Note:... the applique has a satin stitch all the way around it.. and is on a white back ground . The rest of the quilt is sashes and printed fabrics

I don't quilt on top of my applique. I quilt around it.

It all depends of the applique. Some can be quilted over to enhance them and others better to do it just around it.

I like to quilt around mine. But mine are usually small.

I would think to maintain the integrity of the applique one would quilt around it.

I usually quilt around it. But it depends also on the size of the applique and the type of applique. If the applique is large and the batting requires quilting closer than the applique, then I would find some way of quilting on the applique. But usually, I quilt around the applique.

Either...both. The one I'm working on, I'm quilting around the major shapes and then within some of them to give them more dimension. Do whatever works for you!
