I know the OP asked for simple ideas and unfortunately I don't really have any. I have made two quilts out of the same pattern as Dina's Purple Cats. One was a swapping project of "cat blocks made with cat fabrics on off-white backgrounds". My mother-in-law thought it was gorgeous and she has had a side business of pet sitting for years, so I made her one too. I used the same paw print quilt design for the center of both quilts. I had one of my fussy borders of pieced cat paws around the border with a largish stipple over them. For the mother-in-law, I quilted some paw prints walking around the quilt on a simple fabric border, I also used a consistent background fabric.

I have enough blocks cut to make a third quilt, need background fabric. My plan for that was to donate it to the Humane Society, and I was going to give each cat a name, which I would quilt in cursive script along the body of the cat. Other than that, I was just going to outline them and ignore the background, but I like that pawprint Tartan did.

In the magazine with the cat blocks, the quilter did faces similar to Tartan's, and some had a necklace (not really a collar) with a quilted heart shape at the middle of the necklace.

Among my collections of fabric, I sort of got carried away with cat fabrics and have an entire box, not even counting the pieces for the Humane Society. Dogs have less than a quarter of box! Think I have more bugs than dogs, but they share the box along with my limited amount of 30s prints and I think "sewing related" are also in that box...
