I try to buy fabric--supplies from the LQS as I want them to stay in business so I can continue my hobby/stash close to where I live.

I do a lot of classes in the local quilt shops and neither I or the shop owners expect the students to buy their fabric from the shop. Enjoy your class.

Why not just call the shop and ask them their policy? Each shop is different.

The owner even yelled at me a few times because I bought things from Amazon and not from her.
How did she know you bought them from Amazon? Never offer info about any place being cheaper to buy supplies needed for a class. It's no one business to know.

I live in Napa, CA and just took a class a few weeks ago. I did purchase a few 8ths since it was a Bargello Class but mostly brought my own. However, when we took a break I did purchase some fabrics for another project at the store.

I understand that LQS depends on sales of fabrics and notions to stay open, but I find it rather off putting when they are almost *demanding* that you pay for a class and also buy your fabric for the class from them. I have a huge stash most of which was purchased at various LQS's in the area and often prefer to use fabrics I have. I do usually buy things from the store when I am there taking classes, but I do not want to be told that I have to. I'm not going to take any classes at one local store because of their attitude that you *have to* buy your fabrics from them. I find that rather heavy handed and will go elsewhere for classes rather than be dictated to by the LQS.

I had a shop owner yell at me once too! Never went back and that was over 3 years ago. I sure have purchased a lot of fabric since then at every other LQS and on-line. I haven't taken too many classes but the few I have, I always take what I want from whatever source I want. I will probably find something there to purchase but I don't feel obligated.

This comment may not be relevant to your question, but

I strongly feel that if a class calls for a particular book, tool, or ruler - that the student should have it/them.

I don't know if it matters where the student obtained it, but I think it's just plain rude to the instructor and the other students to not have it.

I took a class not too long ago that required a 60-degree triangle ruler. I was surprised that about 1/3rd of the class brought the wrong triangle ruler without realizing it. The store made good sales on 60-degree triangle rulers that day, LOL.

I'm surprised at shop owners yelling at people. I wouldn't ever go back, either. That's not how you build a loyal customer base!

Some stores require you buy the supplies from them. Or a percentage of the supplies from them.
