    Default Quilting with fleece plaid

I am planning on making a red plaid quilt for two queen beds for a cabin. Anything I need to know, since I have never sewn with fleece, does it shrink, can I put cotton on the back? I plan on putting wool batting inside. I will definitely get the non pill fleece. Here's a pic of the plaid.

I have never had fleece shrink...but it stretches like crazy in 1 direction !!!!...and some curls when cut into smaller pieces. I have made several --- fleece one side / flannel or fake fur the other side quilts for kids....but never put any batting in the middle....fleece is very warm all on its own. Best of luck on your project.

I have made several lap quilts with fleece on the back. I never put batting in the middle. The tops are cotton and backing fleece. It was easy to quilt and have had no stretching that I have noticed. It makes a nice, lightweight warm quilt. I always buy a good quality fleece.

Love the plaid fleece. I have quilted on a LA the top, layer of W&N and layer of fleece. DGD wanted it very warm to carry to football games as she is in the band. It was not difficult but was careful not to stretch.

Are you talking about fleece or about flannel???

I think flannel is more commonly used in quilts. Flannel is made of cotton and often shrinks a *lot*, so it is usually prewashed and dried a couple of times before cutting. I also like to heavily starch flannel before cutting, as it makes it so much easier to handle. For pieced quilts, it's usually a good idea to choose larger pieces and a 1/2" seam (since flannel frays more easily than quilting cottons).

Fleece, on the other hand, is made of polyester. Polyester does not shrink. All of the fleece I have seen is 100% polyester, so it should not shrink at all. Fleece also does not fray. It is often used for stadium blankets because you can simply cut the edges. It does stretch in at least one direction (some shrink in both directions), and some edges will curl (I think to the wrong side).

Edit: Realized the OP really does mean fleece. That is a gorgeous plaid! Wish I could find some.

The plaid fleece I had last winter was so crooked from being "stretched" on the bolt that I couldn't deal with it. I washed it and dried it and it snapped back into "true". I've also had a lot of die wash out with the reds. Recommend you allow lots of extra yardage, and pre-wash and dry. This was lqs fleece, not bargain stuff. Makes a great quilt back, or comfort wrap.
