Heard this from a guy standing in front of a rack of magazines at the airport: "Why all these magazines about quilts? Nobody makes them anymore!" Oh, my!

Grew up with an extremely talented seamstress mother who always used "material" for our "outfits". Never " fabric" for our "garments". Guess I'm nostalgic too. I also smile at "sewist" but prefer that to "sewer" because it could be confused with a plumbing term!

I am befuddled when people say "Muslim" for muslin and "taunt" for taut. My first quilting teacher did this. She was wonderful and I learned a lot from her. But she used those words!!

I was watching a very famous quilter on Youtube the other day and she said "Never use can-ed air" when cleaning your machine. I thought I heard her wrong but she said it twice! I never heard anyone say that!!!

My history (in Western Canada) is the same as KenmoreGal2's. Three years of Home Ec and you cut your "material" to make your dress. Was there a geographical difference in terminology that has now spread and taken over with computer usage? Is "material" now considered a bad word?

I think the word fabric just evolved. When I learned how to sew they called it material.

WOW! there sure seems to be a LOT of quilt police, er...quirks in our little quilting/blanket/material world. *giggle*

My mom always called it material and I did too when I was learning to sew. But that was 30 years ago and we also called the couch a ‘davenport.’
