If you combine pieced blocks with blocks that are embroidered by hand, how do you handle the quilting in the embroidery blocks? Quilt around whatever is embroidered, or ignore the embroidery as you might ignore individual pieces in a block and just proceed with your pattern whether stippling or specific?
The folks down under, in particular, do wonderful quilts which combine piecing, embroidery, and applique, but online it's sometimes hard to see the quilting details, and I'm curious how those of you who do such work approach it!
    Thanks in advance!
    Susan :)

I assume you are hand quilting. I sometimes do an echo quilting around my embroidery to ephasize the shape.

I personally dont like it when you quilt over the embroidery. I usually echo quilt around them. It will make the stitching show up and not cut into the design. Just my thinking.

I would quilt around the designs not through them. If they are large and you need to quilt in them, I would do custom quilting - something that fits the design.

Here is a link to pictures of a quilt that I made for my DD. Hand embroidered blocks and machine quilted. The embroidered blocks had the quilting lines printed on it - so they machine quilted them perfectly - Stover Quality Quilting in Stover, MO.

I quilt around embroidery or applique...I just don't like messing with the applied design. This is possibly just a personal quirk...I have no idea if there is a "rule" or not. Also there may be a likelihood of distortion, or splitting the threads.
