    Default Quilting over redwork blocks

Has anyone used a pantograph and quilted over some redwork blocks? My quilts has some blocks done in redwork and I'm stumped as to how to quilt this quilt. I quilt on a longarm.

Do you have an extra Redwork block that you can demo over to make sure this is the route you want to go?

I have had an (1) partial embroidery block quilted over once. And, it came out nice. But, it was not dense quilting. Hope someone else has more experience with this then I do.

I personally would quilt around the redwork, not over it.

I have made an all over quilt pattern thru embroidery. It worked fine on my quilt. I wanted to reinforce the embroidery and it wasn't a problem. I do prefer to echo the embroidery. It detracted from the design a little.

I have quilted over redwork on my longarm using the background color thread and a simple pattern and imo it doesn't destract from the redwork.

If you are using invisible thread then it shouldn’t show if you quilt through the embroidery. Depending on the density of the embroidery, I usually quilt around the embroidery thread. If your red work is just simple lines then the stitches going through it should be alright if the thread matches the background fabric. If you are using a high contrast thread to quilt, it might distract from the embroidery.

Here are a lot of examples of what others have done. I, personally, would not quilt over the redwork. Others have done some special quilting and have used the washable Crayola's to make a pattern for how they wanted to quilt the piece. Perhaps that would help. I know it would help me.

I have quilted an allover quilt pattern on embroidered blocks and it looks beautiful, not at all noticeable if the quilting pattern is not dense.

The reason I do red work, and I have done a lot of it) is because of the traditional look of it. I have quilted around the designs to maintain the traditional look. I have done some by machine and some by hand. I don't think I could ever quilt through the design. I realized that is a personal opinion and obviously not one that is shared by everyone.
