Like others, I favor the Magic 8 method of making HSTs (HSTs being what the 7/8" thing is about). I also learned (the hard way) to oversize them slightly.
While I haven't tried it yet, I found this alternate HST tutorial online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A91W0tUTFyg. Has anyone tried it? If so, how well did it work?

The 3-7/8" can work if your seam allowance is perfect. I prefer to cut mine 4", draw a line diagonally from corner to corner, then sew 1/4" on each side of the line. Most blocks then end u[ a tad big so each HSQ needs ro be terimmed to size.
