For me the 1/2" something is a must. I cut so many things at 6 1/2" so the even 6" just frustrates me.

I don't know if you have seen the neon tape that can be used on rulers but that sure would help distinguish the 1/2" side of the ruler from the whole inch on the other side. I love the neon tape. When I'm cutting a lot of the same size I mark the ruler 1/8" larger with the tape and I can speed cut to beat the band

I have one called 'Is It Square Tool' by Marti Michell and I HATE it, too many numbers, etc and confuses the daylights out of me.... hate having had spent the $ on it!!!! It is really easy to misread and make the wrong cuts on fabric.

If someone knows how to use this dang thing ...?

I love Rob rulers, but sadly he has gone out of business... they are green and have my name on each one...easy to take to class.

We use Creative Grids and love them. The "and 1/2" side is very helpful because most times I am cutting something and 1/2. Once you get in the habit of using them you don't even have to think about which side to use.

I can tell you what I love, and what I really dislike because I've got a few of each. I love the O'Lipfa 24" long because it hangs on tight to the edge of my cutting table and keeps things straight. And I like the 6 1/2" O'Lipfa square ruler, because there's no fancy schmansy stuff on it. It's plain and clear to read. I also like the 18" long X 2 1/2" wide ruler by EZQuilting.
Those are the three I reach for constantly.
On the other hand I'm bothered by Creative Grids rulers because they have that extra half inch that I always forget about. They are supposed not to slip either but they do.
I was given a set of Marti Michell's Perfect Patchwork Templates for Christmas about six years ago and have yet to use them. I know they were very expensive and I feel bad about it, but I have just never had the occasion to need them. If anyone has any suggestions about their use, please let me know and I'll dust them off. 8-)

Funny that you should ask. Last night I was finally finishing the blocks to a quilt started awhile back. I am attempting to square my 10 1/2 in blocks with my 12 1/2 in Optima square ruler. I HATE it. I want the 1 in on the right upper corner, I always get the 12 1/2 in. When I do get the 1 in on the right, its the 1 1/2 in measure. In frustration I turn it over to the yellow side, help! that's even worse. I know its me, I'm just glad I finished the quilt last night and I don't have to deal with it again!!!!!!!!!.
Ahh, I feel so much better.
