Red face quilting on t-shirt quilts

Maybe this has been asked about before, but my thread has been breaking as I am trying to quilt. I had a quilting needle size 80/12 then switched to a size 16 universal needle and still the thread is breaking. Any Ideas or suggestions will be very much appreciated, I have never quilted a t-shirt quilt before. Thanks.

T-shirt quilts are a little bit thicker than a normal quilt. You are not trying to stitch thru the painted areas on the shirts are you?? Is your thread a two ply thread??? I would then switch to a 3 ply thread.

What thread are you using? And are you quilting on a domestic machine or a frame? I'm thinking the most likely solution is to use a stronger thread.

You might try a topstitch needle instead of a universal. If you look closely at a topstitch needle, it has a larger eye and longer scarf, so there is less friction on the thread.

Thanks for the help, knew I could get it here. I changed back to the quilting needle and invisible thread- no problems now. Thanks again.
