Default Quiltionary ~ quilt names, patterns, photos, designed by.......

Hey all, I've been looking left and right on the Quilter's Board resources, blogs, forums, etc. and don't seem to find a place where we can all go and look up a name of a quilt with photo and hopefully each member describing their technique. I would really like to start something like this. I've seen many posts of members asking for certain names, patterns, etc. If any of you know such "Quiltionary" exists here, please let me know. If not, let's get one started! This is very different from the quilt gallery, as this only shows pictures, nor is this like the quilting dictionary, where it only related to the verbal portion. Any feed back is greatly appreciated it.

There are several sites that have a focus on patterns you can learn from. I like www.quilterscache.com and http://www.earlywomenmasters.net/quilts/index.html There is another way you can go on this question. When I see a pattern I like, I repro it in QuiltPro and then have a large listing of patterns available to me. (There are several good pieces of quilting software, I just prefer QuiltPro.) On this site, on any given day there will be a number of delightful patterns. I also use Barbara Brackman's Encyclopdia of Pieced Quilt patterns. That, however, requires some expertise to use effectively.

Is QuiltPro just a computer program or a machine you buy? I'm not familiar with that.

Interesting idea - but 10 people may make quilts that look similar and each person calls it by a different name.
Or 10 quilts may have the same name, but be different.

You are so right Bearisgray. So I would need to focus on the name of the pattern ~ that should not change. Thank you.

You'd be surprised at how many blocks have several names. Especially older blocks that will have one name in one region of the country and a different name in other regions.

I was wondering if the original poster was referring to the blocks in a quilt, or to the whole quilt itself?

I have noticed that many of the quilt photos have titles something like:

    "Finallly finished"

    "Quilt for my MIL"

    "Another QFK Quilt"

If one forgot to bookmark the post at the time, the titles are not very helpful when one wants to find it again.

I don't get it. What problem are you trying to solve by creating this database?

If you, as a dispenser of knowledge, don't know the pattern name, you can't establish a listing by name. If you plan on relying on Brackman's book to magically tell you the names of all the quilt patterns posted here on QB, you'll be very surprised. First off, the book is 19 years old (now out of print) and secondly, it only covers patterns thru 1970 since it's original printing was in 1979. How many of us are still using 42+ year old quilt patterns?

If you, as a seeker of knowledge, don't know the name, you can't search a listing by name.
If you do know the name, the Quilt Gallery, thanks to cat-on-a-mac, can easily get you to the photo, then the maker, then the posting, and then the relevant info or a PM to ask questions.

Nothing will solve the "problem" of pattern name ommissions from photo threads...if that is your goal. There are many reasons the posters don't add that info, all of them valid.

Thank you Scissor Queen, I appreciate the knowledge shared It would be nice though to have a particular forum/site here on "Quilter's Board" where we could all see photos, patterns and quilt names and tips on technique (however it is known to the designer/creator including aka's).
