Quilts, sergers and thread

Quilts, sergers and thread
I found a really pretty layer cake last week, and bought it even though I shouldn't have. Bad bad girl! Actually, enabler hubby bought it for me.
Anyway, I'd like to try and make it with a serger and have the seams on top using some more decorative threads (this will be in the future when all UFOs are finished, but hey, I can dream). So I have two main questions:
First...I read in several places that polyester machine embroidery threads can be used in the loopers for a decorative effect. Has anyone tried this? I don't see why it wouldn't work, but....
Second...I'm going to use my coverstitch with the bottom threads on the top for texture and color interest. Do I need to use any light weight tear away stabilizer? I'll be doing this on one layer of fabric, as opposed to the usual two on a hem.
Any help or thoughts on the process will be welcomed, please share if you've done this.

Projects here for you.

Lots of different techniques and tips. I put the link for all the tutorials so sort through to find a specific topic. Our LQS has held classes to make quilts using serger techniques and different threads. So it does work. I don't think any stabilizer is used in the class quilts. We have used the wooly nylon and also Pearl Crown threads.
Try a sample with the fabrics, settings, and thread first. Best wishes!
