Default Raggy Tips, Tricks and Favorites

Every year I think that we'll see the last of Rag Quilts, but they continue to be very popular. They really are great gifts for both family and friends - and they can so easily be customized. We have a couple of tips and tricks that we use (every year we make a Snuggler, and while sometimes they are minky - which come with it's own set of tips .. we usually do flannel.)

Tip #1 - Keep a piece of wax paper next to you while snipping your quilts. After every 50-100 snips or so, just snip the wax paper to keep your scissors flowing smoothly.

Tip #2 -Use scissors with a short blade - you'll get more torque out of your fingers and your hand won't tire quite as quickly

Tip #3- Wrap medical tape around your finger and thumb, right where you hold the scissors - this helps protect from deep bruising.

Question - What is your favorite scissors to use for snipping rag quilts?

I snapped up a pair of spring loaded scissors off the Walmart bargain bin this year. Short, sharp titanium blades and much easier for repetitive snipping.

I have made many rag quilts. My family loves them. The only scissors I will use are Heritage Rag Snips. I have tried them all, every brand. I will never use regular scissors to snip a rag quilt after that first one I made that way.

If you only make one rag quilt the scissors are worth it.

I now use the Go rag dies, small and large. No snipping ever again for me.

was given the Fiskars Rag Snaps and love them. They don't hurt my hands, which was a big surprise.

Spring loaded scissors are the ONLY way to go. You shouldn't need the medical tape to protect from bruising with them. I have the Heritage brand now, but I've used others too, and they make a HUGE difference.

I don't use scissors, I use a large seam ripper. Just put it in the fabric, a little above the seam, and rip up. Easy Peasy and no painful hands.
