I do not prewash and I love red fabrics. I put it in many of my quilts and have never had any problem with bleeding. Just lucky I guess.

Yes, color catchers work in front load machines. Regardless of what you do, remind her not to leave a wet quilt in the washing machine, remove promptly!!

I can tell you for a fact that Robert Kaufman Kona Tomato did not run or bleed in my 2007 Two-Color Pineapple Quilt. I did not prewash every single piece of it either. The quilt is part of the Ruby Heritage exhibition that will be in Chicago later this month at Quilt Festival. Last year I used Kona Coral in a Pineapple. It didn't discharge any color either.

Does it make any difference if colors | quilts in cold water versus hot/warm water? detergent or no detergent?

I learned to use vinegar to set color in fabrics when I took a sewing class in high school (many moons ago).

I would wash in cold water and use vinegar to set the colors. Hot water will make colors run period!

Hot water and mild detergent uused for gentle washing will not harm good quality cotton fabrics that have stable dyes.

I wash my fabrics ahead of time with the thought that the next owner would be a person that would not baby the quilt.

prewash, and ALWAYS use a color catcher. Red is notorious and you can't count on it not bleeding
