I still have my first cutter and first mat. The mat has been cut in half: one half for my daughter (for crafts) and one half for me (I still use it every day). The cutter doesn't work real well; something is worn out in it) but I still use it for paper. I think I got them shortly after I moved to this house in mid eighties. My first 8"ruler got warped, but it makes a nice addition to the tools in my garage. My first 24" X 6 1/2" "Betty Gahl" ruler is still around. I loved it, but the markings have been wearing off and are very hard to see.

My mom learned to quilt in the mid-eighties, and I remember helping her trace around so many templates onto fabric...by the time I got interested in the early 90s, she had a rotary mat and cutter she was so excited to use (and I was never allowed to touch...not till I bought my own, lol)

I am thinking about 1985 is when I had heard about these tools. I started quilting in 1989 and bought the rotary cutter when I took a quilting class. Love the rotary cutter but I remember watching my grandmother sew and she cut out cardboard from cereal boxes and used scissors so our convenience has come a long way in the quilting world.
