?s re: backing for large lap quilt
#12
I make another complete quilt for the backs of my quilts. If I have to purchase the fabric, I might as well try a new pattern. It gives me practice and my quilts are reversible. Sometimes, I end up liking the back better than the front.

A general rule is to try to not have backing seams at the location where you will fold the quilt. Either Ricky timms or John Flynn has an angled cut technique that is a great idea. I haven't tried it yet. Maybe try a search to find it.

when seaming 2 lengths (or widths, if you prefer the seams to be sideways), 1. rip selvedges, 2. cut in proper length (ask your quilter how much extra to allow), 3. lay 2 pcs RS to RS... smooth to lay perfectly flat....pin several pcs to hold in position on BOTH sides.... now seam both sides.... 4. snip the center of ONE pc and tear up the center Now you have a wide center panel, 2 narrow panels, and they are matched perfectly down their seams, so no 'crawling' into a parallelogram... this is my fave ever since i learned it a couple of years ago from another forum...
