I want to "get to know" more of the quiltling patterns and common square types ... is there any sampler pattern out there that isn't too crazy that anyone knows of?

There are many free quilt pattern sites. Try freequiltpatterns.com and I know you will find something that will work for you. Just put quilt patterns in your search engine and lots of them will come up.

    Good luck

Did you check out the Block of the Month category on this board? There's lots of different ones there! Also if you check out the Links section, there's been some posted there too in the past! :D

there are all kinds of 12" blocks here, and the pins tell you how hard or easy they are.

My very first quilt was a sampler of easy patches based on 9 patch blocks. I am looking for it now, but Hole in the Barn Door, Ohio Star and Variable Star along with the basic 9 Patch are a few that I remember.

We were learning choose colors, how to measure, use a rotary cutter, sew a quarter inch seam, and all the other first time stuff. Remember, this was back in the mid 80s when the fabric choice was rather limited! There were lots of pinks and blues and they seemed to me to be all the same value! :?

I agree, quilter's cache is a great source for block patterns.. McCalls has some of varying difficulties, also http://www.freequiltpatterns.info/in...ternCatagories this is a site that I like a lot.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions ... through one of the sites I found the site Sentimental Stitches ... and found exactly what I was looking for.

Here's a link, incase anyone else is interested:

I used a spiral bound book by M'Liss Rae Hawley entitled, "Make Your First Quilt with M'Liss Rae Hawley: Beginner's Step-by-Step Guide 9 Fabulous Blocks Tips & Techniques" I learned a lot and enjoyed the quilt. There were nine different blocks, sashing, cornerstones, and borders. Enjoyed the quilt a lot and it now hangs on my wall--my second quilt. It's large enough for a lap quilt.
