OK. I'm definitely a newbie. What is a scant 1/4" seam and why use it instead of a 1/4"?

Because of the seam there is a tiny loss of fabric in the fold so a scant 1/4 inch makes up for this. I only sew with a scant as with a full 1/4 my blocks are to small.

Some of the brand new machines have a scant 1/4" foot as an additional part you can purchase. Machines come with the 1/4". Not sure if you can buy a new foot to fit an older machine though.

A "scant" 1/4 inch seam is somewhere between 3/16 and 7/32 inches wide

I just use painter's tape on my needle bed. Painter's tape can be bought in any paint store on a roll. It's tacky but leaves no residue on the bed. I just place the edge just inside the 1/4" gauge on my needle bed. I cut it a couple of inches long which makes it easier to line up your quilt before the the stitching actually occurs. The only draw back in that it covers my bobbin cover. When I need to refill the bobbin I take the tape off and then put put a new piece when my bobbin is filled.

    hope this helps

for the HST and QSTs - I've learned to make bigger and trim down - it's not a totally wasted step - get rid of all the dog ears and messy edges that way, too

I wholeheartedly agree on all three counts! Thanks so much for sharing! :)

i've seen them for sale at my local sew'n'vac repair shop, but i don't know who makes them. i hate 'scant'. they should just say to cut a little bigger and trim.

I also have Pfaff sewing machines and am told that the 1/4 inch foot for
Pfaff is a scant 1/4 inch. You don't have to adjust it. It works great for me!

That's how I do mine, as well, Klue. There is a 1/4 in mark on my open-toe foot and if I sew just slightly to the side of the mark, I have my scant 1/4 in seam.
