I just use painter's tape on my needle bed. Painter's tape can be bought in any paint store on a roll. It's tacky but leaves no residue on the bed. I just place the edge just inside the 1/4" gauge on my needle bed. I cut it a couple of inches long which makes it easier to line up your quilt before the the stitching actually occurs. The only draw back in that it covers my bobbin cover. When I need to refill the bobbin I take the tape off and then put put a new piece when my bobbin is filled.
hope this helps

for the HST and QSTs - I've learned to make bigger and trim down - it's not a totally wasted step - get rid of all the dog ears and messy edges that way, too
