I am not a big fan of either scrappy OR 'matchy-matchy'. I love pulling a whole lot of fabrics from my stash and forming a collection to use (like what you see in my avatar...) I consider that a huge part of the "art" of it-- the selection, picking fabrics that "sing" together. For me, scrappy is a cacophony.

I separate my scraps into three piles when I get around to sorting them children, women, and men. Then when I decide to make a scrappy quilt I go to the designated box and make a quilt! This works best for me. I have a go to quilt pattern called "Magic Square" and it works well for this method. Since I only make quilts for girls, I haven't had to make a boy or girl pile as of yet. Happy quilting!

Scrappy quilts have become my favorites. I love seeing all the beautiful bits of fabrics.

For one quilt, put the scraps you will be using into a large paper bag.
Draw from the bag without looking and USE that scrap. No putting it back into the collection; use it right where it was intended to be!

MAKE yourself do this just one time in your life because it is very liberating, very educational, AND surprisingly rewarding in the end.

We can all learn about ourselves, about our SELF-imposed limitations, and personal messages in our heads. About how we can adapt, and improve, and move more openly and generously through life, if we will piece just one good sized, randomly selected, totally scrappy quilt in our lifetime. And then determine to really like it!

I love scrap quilts. I particularly like the ones where you just pick up pieces and sew them together. I like the feeling of freedom and, of course, I really like the feeling of getting something "free".

Once I spent 3 months making a quilt where I carefully bought the 25 colors and so carefully selected the placement of the colors, cut in diamonds with no sashing, for just the precise look that I wanted - and one of my daughters-in-law saw it and said "Oh, a scrappy." I put the quilt away and haven't looked at it since. I felt so insulted. Not sure why.

I love scrappy quilts and making them. I do control fabrics a little bit by not using the same fabric piece twice in a block. I made one with a 2" navy strip in the center of every block then anything goes for the rest of the block. I love the way it turned out but it did not even make a dent in my scrap stash. After the holidays are over I want to work on more scrappies.

I am making a batik star with a lot of 2 1/2 inch connecting corners. I am sewing the extra line and will have 160 tiny half square triangles to work into another design. yummy.

I like quilts with well over 50 fabrics whether scrappy or planned. I do tend to like the semi planned ones the best. For example 50 blues and 50 creams all different.

I love them but understand so what I normally do is put each colour in a pile start one end for a row and the next row start at the other end of the pile. I think it also depends on how big the pieces are the bigger the more 'out' it looks
