I love scrappies! I think 90% of my quilts are scrappies! I often don't use a pattern but take a common block and draft out my own. I do love D9Ps and Rail Fence, especially combining the two together.

I just finished a scrappy granny square quilt a couple weeks ago. I love it!! I used 2.5 inch left over squares from my 1930's reproduction collection. I followed a tutorial by Blue Elephant Stitches. http://blueelephantstitches.blogspot...-tutorial.html
I used a rose solid for my center square. I hope to hand quilt it.

We have two plans for scrappy quilts. One is the Pineapple block, and the other is Granny Squares. The Pineapple will be completely scrappy. The Granny Square will be more of a memory quilt of all the quilts we've worked on. Each block will have fabrics from one specific quilt, we will keep it for ourselves. Log Cabin also makes a nice scrappy quilt; just divide into lights and darks.

Scrappy granny squares in green and blue
My Scrappy Granny Squares is a Work in Progress. It is a controlled Scrappy. I'm still experimenting to see how comfortable I am with it. Making a smaller block, with less blocks, felt too constrained, so I added that fourth row around. Each block measures at about 11 1/2 inches. I found one key to success making these Granny Squares: For the triangles that surround the small squares? Cut those triangles Extra Large, (by about a quarter inch) then trim your block to size before connecting them into rows.
