I thought exactly the same thing while pulling out stitches one day. I know darn good & well that my grandmother always used a razor. I finally found a razor blade seam ripper at a vendor's booth at a small quilt show and I love, love, love it. It's very similar to the Havel's type only much smaller. Shirley's Creative Sewing was the name of the vendor but that web site isn't working today. I also have 2 of the Havel types only I believe mine were Sullivan's brand and came with 3 different types of blades. I only use the Havel type blade--the other's are even more wicked looking.

My mother also taught me how to use a razor blade. Easy and fast way to rip a seam.
I do all the ripping in my sewing group. I can have a seam ripped out, using razor blade, before they can find their seam ripper.

I am the queen of seam ripping! I actually have a razor blade (the real two sided kind) that I keep in an empty medicine bottle. I have not used it since finding these eyebrow shavers at Wal-Mart a good while back.

I also learned how to rip out seams using razor blades! They last a long time and they're cheap!

Who says you can't use your razor blade? Sometimes I want something very sharp and will use a new rotary blade! Now that works fast! Your quilt, your rules!
