I have just a catheral windows quilt almost finished. After all the handling, it need to be washed. Because of the size and weight, not fit into washer. There is no batting in quilt. Should I have it "dry cleaned" or "laundered". Anyone with experience in this area.

Never ,never dry clean quilts!..Chemicals are too harsh for fabrics.......Do it yourself in tub with quilt soap or Woolite..........

I've done both. Depends on whether I just want to freshen it by washing (which I prefer), or does it have a spot etc that needs to be removed that I can't do myself. If so, then I send it to the cleaners.

I would go to a laundry mat that has the big triple loaders. Do not dry clean , but that being said many "dry cleaners" have regular larger capacity washers that do not use the chemicals used in dry cleaning. They do not "dry" clean mens shirts .. they launder them. .. but using this kind of service you would not have control on the detergents used or the water temperature.
So best bet is find a laundry mat , and pick your own soap product.

Just use your bathtub. Put the soap and water in first, then the quilt. Do some hand agitation, then drain the tub. Put in fresh water, hand agitate, then drain and repeat until the water runs clear. Use a clothes basket to take the quilt out of the tub so you don't break any threads - it will be heavy!! Lay some sheets on the lawn, spread out the quilt, cover with a sheet to protect from direct light and birds.

Thanks - appears this would be a good way to clean it.
