I remember half the time to set them.

Yes, it does make a difference. Crisper folds on your seams and that makes a difference at the end of the quilt.

Eleanor Burns always sets her seams on her programs, I never really thought much about it then until I've read all these posts. Next block I make I'm going to try it.

    It definitely worth the effort.

Exactly why I have been doing this all my years of sewing, and often when just ironing clothes, too. Makes it much easier to then press the seam open or to one side.

I never really believed that "setting the stitches" could make much of a difference. But, since so many of you have tried it and have found that it produces a flatter seam, I will make it part of my pressing process too. It's always nice to learn something that makes our quilting better.

I started setting the seams after watching the film clips everyone else has referred to, and agree that it does make the seam behave better (and makes me feel more like a "real" quilter too!). However, whenever I am enjoying this feeling too much, I find a mistake in my piecing-- and then the trouble starts, since setting a seam makes it much harder to unpick -- the stitches have really sunk into the fabric. So I would endorse the suggestion someone else made to check the accuracy of your seam BEFORE you press it!
