Do batiks dull your machine needle faster? Began with a new one & I've just changed it. Thanks!

Never noticed this problem when using batik. Always start with a new needle and generally do all the top piecing with that needle.

Are you piecing or quilting? I use lots of Batiks, every quilt usually has at least a few, have not found my needles to dull quickly when piecing. Sometimes quilting dulls my needle quickly, but that is a combination or the whole sandwich - top, backing and batting being used. I generally use ( Sharps) for my needle choice in my domestic machine. ( as opposed to universals, topstitch, jeans, etc). It is often recommended to change your needle for each new project or after 8 hours of sewing time. Most of us do stretch that but needles do dull with use.

Nope, not quilting. I'm still piecing the blocks. Kind of going my own way on this project. Going by "feel" versus pattern on this one. Maybe I changed it too soon?

Haven't noticed that my needles dull when sewing batiks. I usually change my needles every 8 bobbins and I use the titanium needles and I have not noticed any issues.

Good question! I heard that too, that batiks are harder on your needles. Glad you asked.

I haven't noticed a problem with batiks causing a needle to get dull more quickly. What size needle are you using? When hand stitching (binding) batiks I find a thinner needle works better.

I have. I usually use a 14 size needle when piecing batiks.

Never felt my batiks' dulled my needle faster. But hitting my basting pins sure does!
