Sewing on the Go???
#1
Hi All,
I have to go on a business trip this week and I am wondering if anyone knows if you can bring a sewing machine in your carry on bag?
I just got one of the mini Janome's and would love to take it with me but am afraid to packit in my suitcase that gets checked cuz we all know how careful the luggage handlers are, NOT!
Thanks in advance for your help. I am flying Southwest if that matters on security rules/restrictions.

Check your airlines check on size restrictions. If you bag falls within their restriction it should not be a problem. You just have to be able to lift it up into the overhead (or ask some nice gentleman for help)

Thanks for the info; I think I will be good.
My business trip is to Las Vegas - everyone thinks I'm strange that I am bringing my sewing stuff... I've never been there so maybe I won't use use, who knows - but I would rather have it in case I want it.

Take something "safe" like hand binding, hand applique, something that you're sure of. Heck, you are on vacation. Read a sleezy book, be lazy in the hottub, browse shops that you can't afford, take a long shower, get your nails done, . . . Get the idea. Although you may be like me and think that sewing is relaxing, take a break and come back to your projects with zeal!

what sarahvincent said. even though i'm allowed to bring a medical device with me on planes, people handle it very badly. it gets shoved around something fierce in the overhead and there's no room at my feet. i bring small things i can do at night and pack in my checked luggage. fabric to cut and pin, rotary cutters, small cutting board, plastic bags, small scissors, etc.
in la you'll want to walk around at night. there's so much to look at and see. you'll be home before you know it and you can pick up sewing then.
enjoy!

Well, I am back from Vegas (yay!). I ended up not bringing my lil Janome sew-mini. I had pre-cut fabric to start a new quilt, had it all packed with my mat and cutters etc. and then decided it still took up half my suitcase and I needed the room. So, reluctantly, it stayed home.
However, I can honestly say that I probably would not have used it much if at all. The work conference is pretty intense and there was a lot of things to do and see in there. Since Vegas is not somewhere we would choose to vacation, I figured I may as well see what I can while I'm there.
I hit NO Quilt Shops (hubby was glad). However, I did come out ahead by 39.00 at the casino (I know, I live on the edge, huh?) so I told DH that is for my fabric fund! He reminded me that I am forbidden from buying fabric until he sees at least 5 more projects done with all the stuff I have..... :?
Anyway, glad to be back, missed this board!!!

NO quilt shops how can that be ! I hit a few while I was there and they were GREAT ! I even bought the Vegas fabric table runner to make from the one store ( can't remember the name) so I will have a dual pirpose souvenior. I was in Vegas in March, isn't it something else ? Loved it and like you I think I broke even at the casinos (such high rollers we are !)
