My GS is soon to turn 5 and loves to watch me sew and wants to sew on a machine by himself. He is very mechanically inclined. He fixes my computer when there is a problem. He wants his own sewing machine and I think he would really use it. (he sews by hand very nice little pillows for his stuffed animals) Toy sewing machines don't seem well made. Any suggestions for a mechanical machine I could get him? I am looking at a mechanical Janome for $99. TIA

Oh I hope someone answers this because I am also looking for a maching for my 9 year old GD. She loves watching me but I do not want her learning on my expensive machine. I hope we get some ideas.

I would check with local dealer. See if you can pick up a used machine. I think that would be a good starter machine for children.

I loved my Brother that was $89 at Walmart. I used it for years, and am now passing it on to someone else. It worked great, and their customer help line was wonderful.

I used a $89 Brother while in Hawaii the last 3 winters, and it worked great. Also watch estate sales! Just yesterday a very nice Kenmore went for $40.00. AND couldn't believe it a Featherweight went for $100.00 almost in brand new condition...made me sick I was a day late - $1 short!

Don't get a mini, I've heard bad things like they aren't heavy enough so they bounce around a lot. I'd hate for his first experience sewing to be frustrating because of an inexpensive machine and he not continue this hobby. I'd go with something inexpensive but full size. Just something basics, I got my mom a brother from Walmart for about $100, its great for normal use. He can always upgrade when he gets older if he chooses.

I think most boys would love an older all metal machine. They are easy to do maintenance on and see inside how they work.

I would go with a full size, mechanical machine for kids. Easy to use and maintain too. :D:D:D
