Is there a rhyme or reason to how sewing machine models are numbered?

Bernina - for some reason unknown to me - has duplicated some numbers -

Ummmmm........ In a word, no. I hate that Bernina did that and have no idea why. They ran out of numbers???

Singer also couldn't leave well enough alone with the Featherweight name. They just ***had*** to use it again.

Edit: How strange. I thought I was editing my original post. Just color me confused.

I agree. I have a Bernina 1530 and then suddenly the newer machines were coming out with lower number of 200 series. Confusing.

I thought giving the new Berninas the same number as the old series was a very dumb idea.
