I'm an intermediate or so quilter and need a new sewing machine! I've been using a Brother XL5600, but the throat is so shallow that it's difficult to work on even the middle of a large baby quilt. Does anyone have a recommendation for something not crazy expensive? I'm not sure I can drop over $1000 on a Sapphire at my level, but I want to be able to do larger quilts...

Have you checked out what a Janome 6600 runs in your area? I have one and it has a 9" throat on it and did a quilt 104 x 110 with fanagaling. Also, is a wonderfully built machine!

The Brother 1500S has a 9 inch throat but is only a straight stitch machine. It's less the 800 dollars. I love mine. I kept my little machine for fancy stitches.

That looks like a good option for sure.
