Look for a tiny piece of thread caught in the bobbin case. Happened to me and was almost impossible to see but once removed my problem was solved.

The clunk could be a simple or more serious problem. If it is hitting the throat plate and there is a bur there are many things that can be as simple as fine tuning the timing of filing off the bur. The clunk needs to be checked out by someone qualified to fix it. I feel it is not for an amature to try and fix that could cause a more serious problem.

I ran into this recently, including the funny clunk sound, with my machine. For me, the problem turned out to be with the spool, where thread had gotten wrapped around the spool spindle. I definitely recommend checking the spool thoroughly to see if anything weird is going on there. If that doesn't turn up anything, I suggest changing to another spool, to eliminate that variable.

I think we eliminated thread as a possible cause by changing out. Also, she has used this brand of thread without difficulty for a long time.
I do think it's worthwhile to look for that bit of thread that may be in the bobbin case somewhere....

Also, the needle threader no longer aligns properly.

As a side note - she was able to sew without difficulty all day yesterday with the same thread/bobbin combo....

    Very puzzling...

I told her the problem was the machine and she should buy an Elna....lol...

I’m not a genius at machines but the needle threader not lining up? Suggest gunk in the needle seat? Something loose or misadjusted on the shank. I just went through a top thread issue with a 1971 commercial machine. I finally got needles and thread matching but mine was a new start up.

She needs to listen (or have a friend listen while she sews) to find out where the clunking sound comes from. I suspect it's coming from the bobbin case. She needs to take it out and clean and reclean every little nook and cranny..use a business card to clean out the small openings in the bobbin case...then oil well. Remove the upper thread and let the machine "sew" at a medium speed for a few minutes to distribute the oil..then check again for any lint that shows up. Another area a lot of people miss is the feed dogs themselves..they can accumulate a ton of lint in them.

Pulling the bobbin case is not that difficult also insure that the alignment tab is in the correct spot. I learned this week pulling the feed plate has certain issues on different machines
