I totally agree - at first I resisted because I thought the price was high. However, after using my wool mat I realized it’s worth every penny. Everyone I have recommended it has bought one. Great for appliqué.

I don't always starch but when I spray anything like that it's Best Press. Love that stuff.

I like Flatter spray better then Best Press. I use a clapper too. In Home Ec class we were taught to use a clapper on all seams. Box pleated skirts were in style and the clapper made the pleats crisp. They use to be very common and every home had one sitting on the ironing board. A 1800 watt iron is a must for me. It sets the seam immediately so one press does the job. Jan my strip sets are bowed even before pressing. LOL

Thanks Jan. I have always used the curved side - but, this makes so much sense.

I could not believe this was possible. Then I tried it and never went back to pressing.

I had been reading recently that if you placed freshly pressed seams under a stack of books, magazines, etc. until they cooled the seams would lay flat. And remembered that many years ago when I sewed garments I used a wooden piece when steaming open seams. So -- I asked my son to cut me two 18 inch square boards which I can place my blocks between after pressing but before squaring them. Once they have cooled, I square them. I am finding that my blocks are matching up much better.

Try making the homemade one using "vodka"! Much cheaper and same great effectiveness.

I purchased a clapper at a quilt show last year and was amazed at the difference it made. It was quite inexpensive.

And, Jan, thanks for your tip. I am definitely going to pay attention next time I am pressing seams.
