The edge has something like sandpaper that as you cut your blade is rolling along that edge getting a sharpening.

i once had the combination cutting/pressing board. it warped badly after a very short time, so was of little use on the cutting side. it did make a nice little portable lap desk though. i used it for years before it finally gave up the ghost.

The combination cutting/pressing board is a flip-over thing.
It has a padded ironing surface on one side, and you fllip it over to cut on the other plastic side.
I found it inconvenient most of the time.
It is wonderful if you want to travel light and have limited space.

I have the one with a cutting mat on one side and ironing surface on the other (WalMart). I also have one from Olfa that folds like a bookand has a carrying strap. They are wonderful for classes and retreats as well as next to your sewing machine. I wouldn't be without one !! Excellent Christmas gift. The Olfa was more expensive but they both do the job.

I just bought the ruler with sharpening edge. Have not had a chance to use it but will next week at a retreat. I bought it more for the fact it is 37" long and not the sharpening feature. A bit pricy but those extra inches may be worth it.

I would sure hate to have to replace my rulers with these. They a a little pricey.

I have the June Taylor press and cut mat and I love it. I keep it next to my machine and use it all the time, I haven't had a problem with the mat warping from the heat of the iron.

I bought the cutting/ironing fold up 'board' at JoAnne's with the 50% off coupon. I love it to travel with. I cut fabric and sometimes sew while 93 yr old Mom naps :-)

I have the June Taylor mat/iron combination and it warped from heat of iron. Maybe should not use steam function.
