Today I stopped at a Salvation Army thrift store. I got 2 great shape printed king sheets for $2.50 ea, 2 twins for $1.25 ea, & a double for 1.oo. 3 were all cotton & 2 were blends. This was cheaper than Goodwill. I've been asking relatives to keep things I might be able to use & let me look thru anything they have before they get rid of things. I gave ea. a list of things I'd be looking for. I'll try anything to save!

I got 3 top sheets from the thrift store for .99 last week! Alyssa took one to use for her bed but that still leaves me with 2 and I got a fitted 100% cotton for $3 so that's not too bad :)

I got a king size sheet set at a yard sale for $7. Never used!! I intend to sandwich it and practice my FMQ on my Nolting Hobby Quilter I bought used a couple weeks ago. This is how I am spending my 3 day Memorial Day weekend!!

No, a sheet was fabric before it turned into a sheet, now it's a sheet :-D It is not our fault that quilters are so inventive that we make a backing out of it!

Funny you mention this - a couple of days ago I saw BOLTS of fabric on sale for $5! Most of them were fashion fabrics, but I got a bolt of a white cotton/poly blend that I will use for embroidering holiday napkins - and a bolt of natural homespun 100% cotton that will be used for BBQ aprons and kitchen towels. Doesn't get much better than that.

Been using sheets for the back for at least 30 years. They never wear out. The 60% cottons don't pill or cause batting to migrate.

I use sheets all the time, they last and hold up great as backing, the less i spend in the back is more i have for the front. And the front is seen more. Go for it. Never feel bad about what you have to use, old clothes etc. Thats the original way it was done so you are actually preserving the way quilts were made in the past, no waste, and money saved for the things you really need to spend it on. There is too much of a push from instructors etc to buy, buy buy and not every one can afford to spend those precious dollars so thinking recycle, repurpose in any area is always a wise choise. All quilts are beautiful whether made from new, or recycled. It is the creative effort you put into it and the fact that you are willing to spend your time doing it that makes the quilt worthy, not the cost. just a thought. DEB
