I know a lot of people put sheets on the back, but if I spend all my time and money for a beautiful top I'm not gonna put a cheep sheet on the back of my beautiful masterpiece. And I think the thread construction of the top is cotton and the sheet is polycotton. Your quilt will shrink differently.

I have often used sheets for the back of the quilt, you just have to watch the quality. I have also used old blankets for batting and it has worked just great too! As GrandmaPeggy says "there are no quilt police" (thank heavens or I would probably be in jail!). LOL

I have one quilt in the making that is a wholecloth using cotton sheets from IKEA. They weren't all that expensive. I wouldn't use poly blends or used sheets...sorry, yuck.

I use sheets as backing and in quilts. I like to tie quilts so it works just fine for me. And with all the lovely prints you do not have to just have solids.

I have used walmart brand sheets for years as backing....they are 250 count and 100 percent cotton and I have had no problem at all doing my hand quilting when using them! The count makes them loose enough for your needle to glide through!

I use sheets, all cotton, for backings quite often and at times have made a mistake and cut scraps of a sheet into a top. Never had trouble with hand or machine stitching these.

I have two ll Bean flannel sheets that we were given and I've been saving them to use for the backing on a few quilts that we will use in our home, not gifts. They are wonderfully soft and thick and will stop the quilt from sliding off the bed. one is going to be cut in half and used for backings for his and her lap quilts that will have a pocket in them for your feet.

I have used them a lot. I buy the cheaper ones or find them at Goodwill.

I just finished my first quilt and I used a sheet for the backing. The sweet little lady who showed me how to quilt suggested it so that's what I used. I hand quilted it and it wasn't very hard to push the needle through, but then how would I know the difference since I never quilted before?
Anyway, because it was my first, I didn't want a ton of money invested in case I didn't like it, etc. etc. But I love quilting and will probably not use sheets every time.

I've used sheets on most all of my quilts/ The only ones I didn't are the ones that I've done for the soldiers, which I use flannel or fleece. I find that the sheets are more economical, since I can get them for a very reasonable price. Of course I don't hand quilt. So I guess it's up to the quilter.
