Hi - I am making a Carpenter's Wheel quilt for my sister and her husband for their anniversary. This is the second quilt I have ever made, and the only one big enough to fit on a Queen Size bed. I put a border on 3 sides of the quilt top, but left the "top" edge to be just bound. But I am now wondering if I should put a border on the top too. That way, the quilt will have a border on all four sides. Can anyone suggest the better way of doing this? I want to have it look as good as I can. I am also under the gun for time, so would like the best of both worlds. Any advice is more than welcome.
    Thanks!
    Terry

I think it is just a matter of choice - but I personally would put border on all four sides.

There's no right answer. You can leave it without a border and if you have extra fabric, make pillowcases or pillow shams. You can also make it much longer and have it tuck over the pillow. Personally, I leave it short and make pillowcases. If you don't have enough to make pillowcases, you can purchase them and just trim with leftover fabric. See my avatar? No top border!!!!

I am making a bed quilt without the top border. Depends on your mood/tastes. I am sure they will love it any which way you do it.

Thanks! I guess I needed someone to tell me it's OK to leave off the top border. If I add the border, the quilt will then be square, which will look odd, I think, on a rectangular bed. So, I will save the time and finish the quilt with 3 borders. I much appreciate all the help.

Sometimes I think it would be nice on a couple of quilts I have not to have to count blocks to be sure which way the quilt goes on the bed.

It's just that if you put borders on top and bottom, you could reverse the top/bottom to bottom/top. If that makes any sense.

it all depends on how you want it to fit the bed. if it fits with only 3 sides having borders, that is fine. if not, all the top border.

No rules in how to make a quilt. Somethings work better - easier - faster - whatever, but no rules. Do what pleases you.

I would think: If it has borders on all four sides you could rotate it so that no section gets too much wear and tear over time ....
