Default Show me your Quilted Jackets, please

I saw a jacket at a quilt shop I was at. It was done kind of like a crazy quilt in pastels and used all sorts of machine decorative stitches.

I had in my head to make one. I just can't remember if the edges were turned under or if they were raw. I also am not sure I trust myself to lay out the fabrics appropriately.

I thought about just doing 2 1/2 inch squares. I have the jacket pattern I am going to use. I have some Quilters Dream Poly batting I bought to try for this. I know it is common to use a sweatshirt but it is simpler to me to make it from scratch. I think the effect will be pretty much the same.

Have you done one? Do you have a picture or can you link me to a picture. I just want to SEE some before I proceed.

    Thanks for your help!

    Mary

Personally, I like Janice Maroni's quilted jacket...it is quilt as you go and flatters all body types. Her company name is Make A Good Day and she lives in NH.

    Default Quilted Jackets

I have used the pattern from Back Porch Jackets and like it very much. Mine is just about worn out and have to either make a new outside or a whole new jacket.

You can take any jacket pattern, the simpler the better, and making it a little bit bigger than you need to fit you. Cut inside fabric and batting. Layer these together, then sew your outside fabrics (crazy quilt style, 2 inch squares, whatever you like). Then cut out to fit the pattern pieces of batting/inside already cut out. Quilt as desired, baste seams together to adjust fit, trim size etc. You can either sew together final size with side seams etc on the inside or outside. Finish seams by covering with bias trim with edges turned under.

If I can find my jackets and my camera, I will try posting pictures later.

Thanks, GEMRM. I already have the pattern and have cut out the batting and backing. I just wanted to see some pictures because I am dithering about the style of patches/blocks I want.

Chigger, if you do a search for "quilted jackets" several threads come up including a tutorial about usint a sweatshirt to do it from UGLYCook.

I am just about finished making a quilted jacket using the layout in the Aug 2009 Quilter's World. Using a different pattern because I wanted a zipper & collar. I'm making it with 12 different batiks. If I ever make another jacket I will not use batting, just quilt the outer shell to the inner shell. I debated taking the jacket apart & removing the batting but I'm afraid the quilting lines may show - so next time. It is really bright but I think I'm going to like it. I put pockets in the side seams & 2 inside pockets.

Sorry that the link didn't work. I guess a link to my search isn't available to you.

Go to the top of this page on the right hand side and click on "Advanced Search". When that new page comes up, type in "quilted jacket" in the KEYWORD SEARCH and then check the box that says "In Title Only". Then click on "Search". You'll get a lot of posts to look at.

If I wasn't on a dial-up connection, I'd do the search for you, but it's too Darn slow out here in the country.

Here is the quilted sweatshirt jacket I made for my mom last year. I don't think I would make one like this again. I think a pattern would have been easier & fit better. Still love the fabrics & colors though.
