Silver Needle

My daughter had me try silk thread for needle turn appliqué. Since I had it on hand I tried it for hand sewing my binding on a quilt. It worked so great! It's strong, doesn't tangle and doesn't show. I'll never use anything else. My preferred stitch for binding is a ladder stitch.

I've been using silk thread for hand stitching for years now- always my first choice. bindings, piecing, appliqué.. I love silk thread.

I wouldn't think that silk thread would be strong enough for the binding. Since i mostly do machine applique, I don't own any silk thread.

The only thing I hand sew are bindings. Silk is super-strong and I love the way it's almost invisible and doesn't tangle. (I could say that it almost makes hand sewing pleasant, but that would be an outright lie, lol).

Besides which, silk thread is so thin and 'disappearing' that you don't have to match the thread to the fabric exactly. Often a gray will work well, or taupe. Try it!

Thank you for posting this. I made an antique Handkerchief Quilt that was completely stitched by hand using Silk thread. I loved working with it. This is a Great idea to stitch binding down using it!

Yep, love silk thread. My grandmother used it to sew on buttons and hems. It was the only hand sewing thread in her basket. I use Superior and YLI silk thread.

I love silk thread and use it for needle turn applique, but I never thought about using it for binding. Thanks for the tip.

I'm starting to really enjoy hand sewing, though I never thought I'd say that. Now I want to buy some silk thread to bind my next quilt!
