The first machine that I ever got to use as a boy, was my Mother’s Singer 301A. It’s the short bed in the LBOW (light brown - oyster white?) color. I think the 301A is the only machine that Mom has ever owned. She bought it new, and it was in one of the trapezoid portable cases. I have the case, but it’s showing (and smelling) its age and miles. I put her 301A into a cabinet for her in 2006, and she’s still using it (she’s 82).

I bought myself a 301A in 2009 that looks just like Mom’s, and put it into one of the Singer Spinet Model 74 “Trapezoid” cabinets the same year. I haven’t ever used it yet, but I just had to have one in case Mom’s gets away. I’ll get it limbered up some day and get it back into service. We’re planning on Mom coming to live with us in the near future, so maybe she’ll let me sew on hers again... if I promise to be careful, of course.

I also have a Black Singer 301 (no “A”) long bed stashed up in the attic at the shop. I still need to round up a bobbin case, cords and control for it.

ThayerRags, Love the pictures of your Mom’s & your 301’s and cabinets. They are beautiful! Someday I’ll get a 301.

I have the all brown 301. I use it for most all my piecing. It's kinda beat in the looks dept but sews a great stitch.

I have a plain tan 301, but what she lacks in looks, she makes up in performance. Piecing is great, but any straight stitch machine should match that. Where she shines is FMQ. With the vertical bobbin, the thread goes straight up to the stitch. She can go any speed with no birdnests on back or any malfunction.

Those are very nice looking machines.

And here are mine. The tan one was purchased at an auction sale by a friend, and the black long bed was a trade in that my sewing machine repairman got and saved for me. I'd been looking for a black one for several years. They're not too common around here for some reason. They both sew well. I'm selling the tan one however. I'm running out of room.......

Beauties, all of them. I'm still dreaming of adoping an old machine. Pining for a good featherweight. Have money will travel...that's my motto.

Very excited just purchased one on E-bay. Its the black and is in wonderful shape. I think I would like to find a cabinet for her. Does anyone know if it will fit in an old thread cabinet?????

Do you do free motion with your???? I think I like this as much as my featherweights.
