Depending on how complex you want the big block - my favorite is the Carpenter's Star...I've used that pattern to make up to lap quilt size by adding borders - but it would work out well for a WOF size. Good luck.

Perhaps you might like the Scrappy Swoon? There is a quilt-along thread here on the board for this quilt:
    http://www.quiltingboard.com/quiltin...g-t262524.html
It's just one big swoon block, done in scrappy squares. I did mine with 2.5" squares and it came out at 48.5" square. You could use 2" blocks if you want it smaller.

Hope you can find a solution that pleases you and is not too complicated.

How about the carpenter wheel by stitchinbee? I think she said it finished at 48 inches using 6.5 inch blocks.

You can also search giant vintage star tutorial and that one is really easy! The link is in a post from Valerie Ann -big block for back of quilt ideas and I think it was Not Wendy that posted the link.

I have made a single star quilt from a pattern found at the Quilt Pattern Factory at [email protected].
The pattern gives directions for a 32 x 42 plus binding and a 40 x 50 plus binding. I made the 32 x 42 in one day and loved it.

That sounds interesting, but that is an email address you provided, not a website.

That is really pretty although I think it is a little more than I want to take on right now. Thanks!!

Goggle: Speedy Baby 2 quilt pattern. I think it makes a 45" by 45" quilt but the borders could be left off.
