I use 6 1/2 inch circles - get about 18 per pair of jeans. Takes 196 circles to make one quilt. One the circles are sewn together a piece of batting is placed in the center and covered with a piece of fabric. The "petals" are stitched down and your quilt is completed. (about 20 hours after starting). I'm working on #10 now. They will be Christmas gifts.
I've actually got one of these started using all black denim

Meyert , yes use a 1/2" seam for your quilt. Denim frays and the seams will come apart when you wash the quilt if you use a 1/4" seam.

Nammie are you using a 1/2" seam allowance for the petals also?

I think (IMHO) that Cathedral Windows would take me forever to do; I like the rag style instead.

I made three for my boys for Christmas like the one the pictured. The petals were one inch wide.

pennycandy - thanks for the seam confirmation

I have made 2 of the circle denim quilts. I made them ragged edges Itried to do the 1/2 on the layover denim but I am not perfect.

They weren't necessarily difficult - it was just the weight of the denim that made me struggle

Here is a picture of one of them - well the upload is not working so no picture... well it did work after all ha ha I don't know how to remove the duplicate one

Meyert-What pattern are you using for your next denim quilt if you are not doing the rag denim quilt? The only thing I thought I could do with denim was a rag quilt. Also, thank you for the picture of your cathedral denim quilt. I really like that.

Nammie-Thank you for your picture of your denim quilt. Do you turn the denim pedals under and sew or do you just raw edge sew and let the denim fray?

Thank you everyone for all of your recommendations. I will try and see how many and what size squares I can get out of the jeans. It looks like any size will do. Not really sure I need batting tho'?
