    Then we have a 'California King' size, but I'm not sure what
    the dimensions are on that one.
    ---------------------------------

    I know what you're saying...some years ago we decided to buy
    a new mattress set, and the sizes totally confused me. There
    was also a Twin, Double, Extra Long Double, King, California King,
    Eastern King, and a Queen and an extra long Queen, plus you can
    order your own mattress made to your own dimensions, especially
    if you have a custom made bed, or an antique one. And don't forget
    the ever popular Bunk bed mattress. Plus all they've thought up
    since that bewildering shopping trip.

    Hi Caroline - here is a translation:

    Bassinett = crib
    Crib = cot
    Twin = single bed
    Full = double bed
    Queen = larger double, 6" wider and longer
    King = huge
    California King = ridiculously huge

    If you google "quilt sizes," you will find several sites that list not only quilt sizes, but also mattress sizes. However, I've found it most reliable just to measure the top of a given bed and decide how long I want it to hang over the sides, and how much room I want at the foot and the top (do I want to allow enough to "encase" pillows or just to lie flat?), and then go from there.

    One such site gives the following information for queen sizes:
    For quilts: usually between 88"-99" wide; length about the same. Queen mattresses are usually 60" x 80". But you would have to add to this significantly, if you wanted more overhang, possibly as much as 13" on each side.

    I don't know for sure about quilt sizes but I have researched a little about this and this is what I came up with ... if anyone else knows differently ... please let me know:
    Crib 32x48
    Twin 69x90
    twin xl 69x102
    full 84x90
    queen 90x95
    king 106x98
