What size should a full size quilt be? I have pieced this quilt and laid it out on our king size bed, and the top covers the bed. How much batting and backing to allow for quilting? I will quilt it on my Simply Sixteen.

I'm not sure about the size of a full size quilt. It varies depending on how much drape you want on each side of the bed. Is your quilt rectangular or square? Most LA quilters request 4 to 6 inches extra on all sides for batting and backing. Hope this helps.

Upload of picture if you can. We've love to see it.

'Standard" is a stretchy word but heres the general guidelines.
https://www.generations-quilt-patter...ilt-sizes.html

A lot of these charts are dated now because mattress thickness has become larger and larger. A 12" thick mattress quilt is different than a 18" mattress quilt. And will it be used like a comforter on top? The drape over the sides might be considerably longer. If it is a gift ask them to measure from the bottom of the sideboard to bottom of sideboard. and from the headboard to the bottom of the bottom...if they want it tucked you'd need to add another 12" and if they want it to fold up and over the pillows...add ?? So best to ask how they intend to use the quilt 120X120 would be safe.

Many get put in a cupboard, so you can save fabric and time and make a pull over me on the couch quilt.
I think we were the last Americans to move from double bed to queen bed so at least 1/2 of my quilts are double size. If they are quilts I want on top I added a 16" strip of sheet to the bottom so they will tuck, but mostly I just toss them across sideways. Plenty of drape

As Stitches23, it varies. Here are some charts for the different sizes. There are probably a lot more out there.

I would take it to a Mattress store and drape it across a full size. The problem I notice with quilts I have made in the past is that mattresses are deeper than they used to be. They eliminate many box springs.

Don't forget, that you also lose a few to several inches to the size when you quilt it and again when you wash and dry. I started keeping a notebook of what size my pieced flimzy was, how big it was when I took it off the longarm, and again when I gave it its first wash and dry. It is amazing how much you can lose. I also note the type of batting and thread used. Those sometimes affect the amount of shrinkage also.

Once Christmas is over, I will get back to making a new quilt/bedspread for our queen size bed. With the different sizes of mattresses these days, I measure what the size has to be, from side to side both length and across from side to side. I measure the mattress and box spring also as I don't want to use a bed skirt. I am using all fabric I have, should use up quite a bit of fabric and keep me busy this winter.
