I had the fun pleasure of introducing 2 men to their first sewing experiences in the summer. One man made me laugh so hard. Mr. Macho he was saying loudly this is for you ladies to do. We are doing the cutting with "tools". I know much was in jest so no big deal. It was when he saw me teaching another man how to do the basics and he said, "I can do that!" Well I put him on a serger! His first few pieces were ummm... challenges. But he got the hang of things. He then wanted to learn to sew at least a straight seam on a regular sewing machine. By the end of the afternoon I even had him making rolled hems! I would love to give all of my men (a 3rd one had some experience sewing a boat cover) more sewing lessons and they all ask for more.
It sounds like you are going to have a whale of a time with your neighbor teaching him to sew. I can't wait to see what kind of quilting projects you have in store for him.

It sounds like this will be such a fun time to teach someone how to sew.

Over the years I've heard some men refer to sewing machines as "thread injectors" and know a couple of guys who love to operate longarms, viewing them as power tools. If you watch any of the car restoration shows on TV, you'll be amazed at the sewing talent those guys have, basically creating 3-dimensional FMQ'd sculpture in car upholstery.

Some men are very good quilt makers. Some have been engineers of some kind. Some could put some women to shame .

Very funny the names some guys come up with.

There was a local lady that did professional embroidery work (race teams, etc.). When her husband was laid off from his job, she put him to work on an embroidery machine. They had a very good business.

How funny, he will make a great sewing partner. Please let us know what else he comes up with. Love the ski foot.

This has nothing to do with quilting, but my old boss once referred to his computer mouse as his squirrel. Needless to say, he wasn't very computer-savvy. I still laugh every time I think of it.
