    add 1 cup of white vinegar to the wash.

    Cat litter works also except you wouldn't want too spill it on the material unless you WERE going to wash it. I put some bowls in a bag with some and closed it up for about a month. The cat litter smelled of smoke but the material didn't anymore.

    What i did was put the fabric in a large trash bag w/ approx. 10 dryer sheets and left it a week. Smell was gone

    It is great that a quilters fabric and notions went to another quilter. It's great that you are going to honor her memory by using it or passing it on in her name. I'm also a former smoker. I'm coming up on my 1 year anniversary for open heart surgery and for my surgery I quit smoking. I just had my 1 year birthday from smoking on July 2. I completely forgot and didn't even do anything to celebrate. Anyway, woo hoo for me for 1 year under my belt.

    If you do decide to pass on some of her fabric I would be honored to have some and you wouldn't even have to worry about washing it first. I could do that. It wouldn't bother me a bit. Congrats to all who have become non smokers and good luck to those trying and haven't been successful yet. You will make it when you are finally ready.

    use frebreeze in wash and thenin rinse or your can use vinegar in the wash and rinse cycle

    I have had rentals years ago and some of the people smoked quite heavily and of cousrse smoke permeated the apartments. So what I did was put a dish of ammonia full strentgh in each room and close it up overnight or whatever. Opended up windows when it was okay to do so next day to freshen everything. Worked like a charm! Why not try to do this with the fabric. Put some things in a big box and see if that helps. Then there is the vinegar to add to the wash. Good luck. Crisimi

    bars of Dial soap with the fabric in a closed plastice bag left for several days works too.
