Have a new question about my smoking charms quilt. I'm getting close to my quit date, and about ready to start piecing together the hexagons. I settled with using 2" hexagons (side measure) and instead of the flowers, I'm just going to randomly put them together, a sort of Ispy quilt. The question is, should I start by sewing the hexagons into straight rows, one after another? Or should I start in one corner and work my way across to the opposite corner?

I'm going with a queen sized quilt, and by one website, I should have 26 hexagons across and 33 hexagons long. I'm asking since I have a hexagon grid that I am going to use to keep track of the hexagons I've put together.

I find it easier to join chunks than rows, personally, so I would start in a corner and work my way out. I would also break your grid into pieces; there comes a point where the completed part becomes too unwieldly to handle, so it's easier to make reasonable-sized pieces and them join them. I find that once it's over 2 feet in each direction, I prefer to start a new chunk.

I think I would do "chunks" like Jennifer23 has talked about.

If this is hand work, it really does not matter "where" you start if you are following a pattern/design and are keeping track of what you are doing.

I haven't seen a true scrappy hexagon quilt. So much work goes into it, that most of the ones I have seen have been structured so that you can see the beautiful hexagons emerge. I was surprised at how pretty a true scrappy could be. https://www.flickr.com/groups/charmh...ong/?ytcheck=1
