I discovered marking my dark fabrics with a thin sliver of handsoap. It washes out of course when I wash the quilt.
I'm nothing if not frugal. :-)

I learned this for garment making first, then quilting! DIAL soap works good, but IVORY..it is a dream!

I know what you are going through.. just marked a project with the dissappearing marker .... all gone in about 20 minutes. I can sew fast .. but not that fast. I am sure the humid weather did me in!

Just beware that if you haven't wet this and iron it the lines will come back and be permanent..... Ask me how I know that one :)

I'm sorry for your struggles. I am also curious as to why you would mark a quilt for meander quilting. Please share. You may be on to something.

Ok, maybe this will help. You said you made a stencil---so when you are ready to do a certain dark area, can you remark that area right then? In other words, do a section at a time. You should be able to match the stencil up to your marks on your light parts easy enough.I am like you and prefer to have lines to follow and this has worked for me before. I cannot do free motion on a regular machine but I sure can pretty much follow a line.

I make a stencil using stencil plastic from The Stencil Company by cutting it with a Clover double-bladed knife. Then I pounce it with The Miracle Chalk pounce (or Ultimate Chalk) which irons/washes off. I pounce as I go doing a few square feet at a time or a section at a time. I also put Miracle Chalk into my Clover chalk markers for free-hand marking.

When I read this, I started laughing...thinking you probably lived in CO, where it is so dry. When I lived there, I had to learn to only do a small section at a time as it dried so fast..pooof, and it's gone. Now in WV, it stays for days at a time. That's what you get when you move from one side of the country to the other.
