Spray Basting Questions
#12
I spray baste. The reason I started was because of all the wrinkles I was getting when quilting. I use 505 Spray and Fix. I've heard it's the best stuff out there, but I've never tried anything else. It holds through the entire process. I've taken a project off the L.A. and leave it for 2-3 days and come back to it and it's held up as if I just basted that day.
It comes out in the wash after the first washing.
Note - If you use spray baste to hold down any templates for quilting (i.e. - acrylic templates) you will need to remove the spray baste from the templates with something like nail polish remover. Learned this the hard way ;-). Have fun!

I spray baste, usually on the wall in the hall. Most of my quilts are only basted for a few months. I do have my "waiting" quilt. It is a lap quilt that I take to Dr. offices or anywhere else that I have to sit & wait. It is over 2 yrs old. As my first spray basted quilt I thread basted it also. I did not need to. The adhesive is still holding.

It does hold. Don't be overly heavy with the application and if you are using a polyester batting, then spray the material rather than the batting, as the sprat melts the polyester a bit. Spray outdoors in well ventilated site. It is very easy to spray baste against a wall by pinning the backing, spray backing, apply batting and pin if extra support is needed, spray batting and smooth the top over it. I sometimes add extra tacking stitches if it is a particularly large quilt.

I have spray basted since it became available--June Tailor's (from Walmart). I spray INDOORS, Sparingly, and it works like a charm. I have asthma but the June Tailor spray does not bother me at all. Pehaps some are more sensitive to it than other.

The reason for the ventilation when spraying is because ALL sprays contain VERY toxic chemicals(whether you like the smell or not)! But it's the only way I baste and I love it! I use an old vinyl tablecloth under the edge of my quilt and that takes care of the overspray problem.
